another question...

... is it common practice to sit on the floor during homilies in an Orthodox church? I know there are usually no seats/pews I just thought people stood through the homily too. To clarify I've only seen people sit on the floor in OCA parishes. At the DC Orthodox cathedral they stand through the homily so I thought that was more common.

Just curious.

This is one of those cases where your mileage will vary. I have seen both practices (sitting and standing). On a personal note if I know the priest has tendency towards longer homilies I will look for a spot to plant myself unless it's obviously not encouraged.

Much will depend on the presence / absence of pews. In the seminary I attended, St. Vladimir's in Crestwood, NY, it was common practice to sit on the floor during the homily. In the parish where I am pastor, most people sit on the pews during the homily, but there is a large open space in the middle of the chuch where some have been know to occasionally sit on the floor during the homily. Much will depend on the particular ethos of the local parish.

The benches around the walls are reserved for the elderly, infirm, guests, and people who are holding children, the rest of us just plop on the floor.

Unless the Bishop is visiting, then we all stand during the homily.
(we are OCA)

In our church we usually sit cross-legged during the homily. It is a good break from standing and it gives Fr Anthony's talk an informal air. That is especially good for visitors who may be having plenty of cultural issues with icons, Mary, vestments, liturgical worship and all the rest. We do our best to be Orthodox with minimal cultural barriers for the curious. We are OCS, in Colorado Springs.

They don't sit on the floor at the OCA Cathedral in Dallas.
