When I first returned, I thought, "Oh, gosh. I gotta start thinking about saints again!" It was slow going. But over time and with the help of your blog, I quickly came to appreciate our ancestors in the faith. There is a heft to our religion that is more pronounced because of these type of things. It makes me remember that what is really important, is the incorruptible spirit that lives in us. Relics are simply amazing.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME??this kinda stuff just might make me go all Cath-O-LicMajor Coolness
I just had to laugh when I read this. It's so true. Catholics are really weird. We do weird things. We talk about weird things. To be a good Catholic essentially means sacrificing your "cool kid" status at lunch to sit with the trekkies.
so true Ben. Now, let's get to work converting WPDunn. :-P
This is SOOO COOOOL!!Glad I'm a Catholic:<)!I love St. Catherine of Sienna...what a great saint.
Cliff, as she is, so will you and I be.
The rest of her body is buried in the Basilica Santa Maria sopra Minerva, which is located just behind the Pantheon in Rome. Relics are cool because we can use everything in creation to give glory to God, even a saints head!
Paul Bernacchio: I was privileged to visit Basilica Santa Maria sopra Minerva to venerate her, visit her room, and even pray at the grave of "Fra Angelico"...a real treasure. Thanks for the reminder!
Arghh! You both beat me to it! I was going to write about St Catherine's body in Santa Maria sopra Minerva.Did you know that it is the titular church of Cormac Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor? I don't know why I thought I'd mention that...
Catholics are cooler than trekkies. We're the counter-culture. I'll sit with the Goths and try to weird them out!
Many years ago, in my youth, visited Sienna on St Catherin's feast day - not only can you see her mummified head, after mass there's the 'blessing with the finger' (no, really!) where the priest take one of Catherine's finger in a finger-sized little reliquary, and blesses the assembled throng with it. Yep, we're banished from the cool kid table. Bet we could sit with the Goth freaks, tho.
we *are* the goths and the freaks.
"more reasons why protestants will never get us..."It's funny that you posted this... comments under a photo of the same relic at another Flickr account inspired me to make that Beavis and Butthead "Relics are cool" pic a while ago. Some non-Catholics like it:http://www.flickr.com/photos/curiousexpeditions/985887784/"Sometimes I truly wish that I could be a believer -- they have all the best grisly doodads. This is magnificent.""I know, they have the best stuff. At one church in Florence, we found a museum near the rear, and it was just bursting with mummified fingers in ornate reliquaries. So cool."
Cool! I always wanted to high five St. Stephen of Hungary...
