my new favorite saint...

... St. Margaret of Cortona.

Giovanni Lanfranco, Ecstasy of St Margaret of Cortona circa 1622.

Her patronage is against temptations; falsely accused people; hoboes; homeless people; insanity; loss of parents; mental illness; mentally ill people; midwives; penitent women; single mothers; people ridiculed for their piety; reformed prostitutes; sexual temptation; single laywomen; third children; and tramps.

She's just so perfect for me... with the exception of one or two that don't apply.

Patron of single laywomen? Then she's perfect for me, too.

As I recall, she was a single mother with a son, and I think she either did become a nun or lived very much like one.

She was also very dramatic, and would open her window in the hours of the night and loudly bewail her sins to the sleeping people of Cortona, who would in turn go to their window and remonstrate with her not to be so hard on herself. It was the stuff of operas...

You're welcome. :-)

That last comment makes me want to ask ... but the question would be both imprudent and impudent ....

I sent her a link with the story of St. Margaret of Cortona's life a few days ago.

She can be a patroness for those addicted to internet porn. They on they other hand can follow her act of contrition by posting on their walls a public confession of their transgressions everytime they fall. Because it's so easy to just say "Same as last week father."
